Waipara Springs

Bruce and Jill Moore had lived on their property in the Waipara Valley on the South Island of New Zealand, about 45 minutes drive north of Christchurch, for many years when they planted the first vines 1982. Waipara Springs is one of the oldest wineries and has some of the oldest vines in the country. Their Chardonnay is on its own un-grafted roots, which is unique in the region. In 1981, in conjunction with Lincoln University, Bruce planted the first Pinot Noir vines in the region to gauge how they would respond. The results were hugely successful and now the area is internationally recognised as producing outstanding Pinot Noirs. Today Bruce and Jill's son Andrew runs the winery with his partner Katie Lumber. The location of this cool climate region where the vineyards are sheltered by the Teviot Hills from easterly winds, relatively low rainfall and long warm days and cold nights, all combine to create a microclimate that is perfect for quality grape cultivation. Add to this the ancient soils, rich in limestone, derived from a prehistoric lake bed resulting in high levels of PH, and you have the ingredients for totally unique wines with a distinct depth of intensity. Today they have 26 hectares planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir. Waipara Springs craft a portfolio of cool climate vibrant fruit-driven, aromatic wines with fantastic varietal definition.
