Wine tasting notes

At release, the wine has a deep red colour to the centre with a vibrant purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and subtle herbal and mint characters along with complex spice and cigar box from the oak. This is a full-bodied, complete wine with smooth silky tannins across the palate. Ripe flavours of blackcurrant and cassis abound, followed by subtle secondary French oak characters of cedar and spice. The tannins are fine and elegant and the finish is long and persistent.

Winery Information

Wakefield Estate

Wakefield is a third generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first 178 hectare vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn. The vineyard was carefully chosen to benefit from red-brown loam over limestone soils (also known as Terra Rossa) and the Clare Valley’s cool climate which were known to.. read more

July 2015 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - A blend of Clare Valley and Coonawarra fruit, the deep garnet-purple colored 2013 Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon opens with tons of minted blackcurrant and black cherry notes with some chocolate and clove hints. The medium to full-bodied palate is filled with juicy fruit, nice freshness and chewy tannins before finishing long.

(aged in used French oak casks of varying size) Inky ruby. Focused aromas of blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate and mint. A juicy, energetic midweight, offering dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors that show good clarity and a zesty, spice-tinged back end. The dark chocolate note carries through the nicely persistent finish, which features dusty tannins and a hint of smokiness. (2010)17 pts

Tasted Nov 2014 - Enticing smoky oak and spice with an impressively pure fruit and ripe, long persistence. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel. Very Aussie. Clearly a step up from their (very good) basic Cabernet Sauvignon, for only a modest increase in price. GV (RH)

Tangy, juicy berry and plum flavors show some gutsy tannins and accents of black tea and spice.

Wine Enthusiast (2014)89 pts

Concentrated and ripe yet crisp and vibrant, this wine blends Clare Valley and Coonawarra Cabernets to good effect. Bay leaf, black cherry and dark chocolate notes abound, while the texture turns slightly grainy on the finish. Drink now–2025.

Machine-harvested, destemmed, 5 days on skins prior to fermentation in stainless steel with cultured yeast, 8 weeks post-ferment maceration, matured for 16 months in French oak. Good colour; attractive wine, the regional synergy working well, juicy cassis fruit in a light spider web of dusty tannins; good length and balance.

Wine Front (2013)92 pts

Strong with mint and blackcurrant but feels velvety as it slips along the tougue and has enough weight to make you sit up straighter. This is a very good Jaraman cabernet. It will hold and mature but I'd drink it young, mostly because it feels so good to sink your teeth into its youthful juiciness.

Minty coolness on the nose of this gorgeous Australian red wine is flooded by fleshy blackberry richness on the palate. A hedonistÆs wine to fill the senses. Full-bodied and smooth Cabernet Sauvignon. Finishes with dried herbs, tobacco leaves, cedar brush, cracked black pepper, dark spice and black olive. Firm tannins. Good cellar wine. Very satisfying, especially at this price. Pair with ribeye steak.
