Named in honour of Bill Taylor, The Pioneer is a bold step in the Taylor family's continued journey to craft refined and distinctive wines that rival the world's best. The grapes come from a series of exceptional vineyard blocks earmarked by Adam Eggins. Those blocks cover a range of micro-climates and elevations within the St Andrews vineyard, the Auburn estate and southern Clare Valley.
This wine is a deep red with hints of purple. On the nose, the wine displays a complex perfume of spice, dark cherry, plum, dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee beans and charred oak. The palate is full and generous but with refreshing levels of acidity and tannins ensuring this is a wine to age.
Wakefield is a third generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first 178 hectare vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn.
