Warwick Estate

This historic estate dates from 1771, and was known as “De Goede Sukses” or “Of Good Success” until 1902. Following the Anglo Boer war, Colonel William Alexander Gordon, the Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire Regiment bought the property, renaming it “Warwick” as a tribute to his regiment. In 1964 Stan and Norma Ratcliffe bought the estate and sold their grapes to the KWV co-operative until 1984 when Norma, who had become increasingly interested in wine production and had studied oenology, released her first wine – “La Femme Bleu” or “The Blue Lady”. Norma is a matriarch in South African wine circles - one of the first South African women to make wine and the first woman elected to the Cape Winemakers Guild which she later presided over. Warwick continues to be family owned and run, now headed by Stan and Norma’s son Mike. Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties thrive on their terroir, especially Cabernet Franc. Warwick were the first South African winery to produce a single varietal wine from this variety. They also cultivate Sauvignon Blanc and the South African signature grape varieties, the red, Pinotage, and the white Chenin Blanc. The vineyards, which are farmed with sustainable and organic principles, are planted in the foothills and on the mid-slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain at an altitude of between 240 and 360 metres above sea level, on a range of soils featuring gravel, loamy clay and richer clay. All Warwick wines carry a loving cup symbol – Norma first found one of these ornaments in a charity shop – she began collecting them and now has the largest collection in the world! Warwick make some superb wines – their Trilogy Cabernet Sauvignon dominated Bordeaux blend was first released in 1986 – it’s now a flagship wine for the South African wine industry, appearing on some of the best wine lists and tables in the world. Why not let one of Warwick’s wines from their superb portfolio appear on your table, and see what these multi-award winning wines have to offer!
