Kilikanoon was founded by Kevin Mitchell in 1997 in the picturesque hamlet of Penwortham in South Australia’s cool Clare Valley. Kevin comes from a long line of grape-growers. His father Mort is renowned as one of the Clare Valley's most experienced grape-growers, who had planted and cultivated Kilikanoon's Golden Hillside vineyards, including the famed Mort's Block for over 40 years. Now Kevin wanted to turn his vision of creating his own wine brand into a reality. The first wines under the Kilikanoon label were launched in 1997. The cellar door property had been called Kilikanoon since 1860, named after an estate in Cornwall called Kilikaganoon, which translates from old Celtic to mean “a nut grove on the down”. Both Father and son were fascinated by the terroir of the Clare Valley, which has three parallel valleys, each with their own unique individualities – the altitudes vary from 300m to 600m - and their Trillian’s Hill Vineyard is one of the highest in the valley. The soils range from red brown “terra rossa” over limestone to black alluvial. The Clare Valley experiences diverse and unique microclimates and the Kilikanoon vineyards have been carefully selected to deliver a range of wines which express the individuality of their region. The results are powerful and elegant wines showcasing the ultimate expression of Clare Valley terroir, with seductive use of French oak enlivening the senses. The wines are handcrafted using traditional methods, vinifying each parcel individually, and keeping them separate until the blending works its magic achieving the desired regional and varietal interpretation in each wine. Not only are Kilikanoon’s wines multi-awarded, but their Oracle Shiraz has been rated the best Shiraz in the world three times – 2002, 2005, 2014 and more recently 2018 – that’s four times in sixteen years – no other Australian wine has such a record of success. Kilikanoon has also been awarded Australia’s best winery seven times in eleven years from three different independent sources – no other Australian winery can boast that either! These beautifully crafted, harmoniously composed wines have something to suit every palate and price range – they really are amazing!
