Bodegas Aalto were founded in 1999 in Ribera del Duero, located in Valladolid on Spain's northern plateau within the autonomous region of Castilla y León. This region has a rich wine-making history and is home to some of the most prestigious wines of Spain. Aalto have some heavyweights of the Spanish wine-world behind them: Mariano Garcia, a former winemaker at legendary Vega Sicilia and Javier Zaccagnini, the former head of Ribera del Duero's Consejo Regulador; their combined expertise has created a very special project. Aalto are a monovarietal winery and only produce wine from one grape variety – Tinto Fino, aka Tempranillo. They control 130 hectares of old block Tinto Fino vines, the age of which is between 40 and 100 years old, and produce very low yields and grapes of exceptional quality. The vineyards are distributed over more than 200 plots, on nine different Ribera del Duero municipality appellations. The resulting wines are reflections of each distinct location, and are expertly blended at the end of the ageing process to create complex wines with truly unique personalities.
