Wine tasting notes

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is our 5th Stellnebosch vintage. This wine's ever-increasing quality is evident in that we have gained a greater understanding of the Stellenbosch vineyards and terroir. 2018 was vinified entirely at Boekenhoutskloof in tulip-shaped concrete tanks with élevage on our OXOline 2 system. The changes in vinification and élevage had a significant impact on the Cabernet's style, resulting in a more refined claret like structure with dark fruits and graphite.

Expert reviews

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2018) - 90 pts

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch was matured for 22 months in 70% new French barriques. It has a ripe, generous bouquet of pure dark cherries, boysenberry and cassis fruit, strangely Syrah-like in style. The ripe and generous palate is medium-bodied with a sweet opening, blueberry and cassis fruit and nice balance, although it just misses a little amplitude toward the finish.

Decanter (2018) - 95 pts

Claret fans will love this restrained, cool, mineral-laden wine made from selected parcels on the Helderberg's decomposed granite soils. This, the fifth vintage, includes 5% Cabernet Franc, which adds attractive violet and herb tones to the focused dark black berry, cassis and pencil-lead flavours, backed by fine-grained tannins, minty-fresh acidity and gentle oak spice. Gorgeously elegant and ageworthy. As with the Franschhoek Cabernet, it is aged 22 months in lightly toasted barriques, but here only 60% new. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2018) - 5 stars

“Rich, ripe black berries & cherries on pronounced & perfumed 2018. Warm texture lifted by attractive herbal whiffs (5% cab franc making presence felt), 70% new French oak - up from 60% in 2017 (4.5 stars, 94 pts) - works to good effect, taming sturdy tannins & adding spicy interest. From 5 parcels in Helderberg & Faure.”

Tim Atkin (2018) - 96 pts

“It’s surely no coincidence that Boekenhoutskloof moved into its swanky new cellar in 2018, as the quality of most of its wines has gone up a notch. This comes from two excellent growers on the Helderberg and is wonderfully focused, layered and complex with some underlying grip, blackcurrant leaf top notes and some seasoning from 5% Cabernet Franc. 2022-30”
