Cantine Belisario

Cantine Belisario is a cooperative, founded in 1971 in Le Marche on the east coast of Central Italy, behind the knee of the boot, in the Matalica DOC. They are the largest producers of the indigenous white grape of the region – Verdicchio. Verdicchio di Matelica, which is situated in the western-centre of the region, close to the Appenine Mountains that traverse the region near the border with Umbria, is a much smaller region than Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, which is located in the north-central Marche. The terrains and climates are very different: Jesi is rich in clay and skeletal deposits, and is open to the sea ; Matelica is richer in minerals and is further inland, planted at higher altitudes, where the influence of the mountains can be felt. The production of Matelica is only one-tenth that of Jesi and it is therefore more sought after. Cantine Belisario farm 300 hectares divided between 24 vineyards on the Alta Vallesina [Vallesina is the only valley in the Marche area], all within 10 minutes of the winery. Verdicchio is one of Italy’s greatest native grape varieties, yet one of the most underestimated outside the country, but a taste of these superb dry white citrussy wines will set you reaching for another glass!
