Wine tasting notes

Sauvignon Blanc Reserve in the first year after harvest shows a pale straw colour, fresh aromas with scents of exotic spice, figs, grapefruit and thyme. On the palate it is full and round with rich fruit sensation and minerality balanced by bracing acidity. The wine reaches its prime in about 5 years after release.

Cape Chamonix

Chamonix Wine Farm is nestled against Mont Rochelle mountain, deep within the rich wine-growing valley of Franschhoek in the Western Cape. Formerly part of historic La Cotte granted to the Huguenots in 1688, Chamonix today comprises some 300 hectares. German-born Chris Hellinger purchased the farm in the early nineties when it was predominantly an export fruit farm. With tenacity and vigor a replanting program began, steadily replanting fruit trees with noble French varieties of vines and with an engineering background combined with old world principles an underground cellar was built. An underground passage leads one through the cellar up into the Blacksmith’s Cottage, built in the late 1700s which now houses the Winetasting Room and Sales. Chamonix has around 50 hectares under vineyard. As purists, they believe that to produce a wine of character, containing all elements of grape, unique terroir, and process, it is essential that only Chamonix grapes are used. Against the mountain, the farm benefits from cool breezes during hot summer months and stony, clay-rich soil, giving the wines the unique personality and character which make up the Chamonix story.

April 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2015 Reserve White is a blend of 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 21% Semillon, matured for 14 months in 20% new oak, including 15% whole bunch fruit. It has a generous bouquet with scents of tropical fruit, shaved almond and sea spray. The palate is rounded on the entry with light green apple and melon notes, moderate acidity with a straightforward finish that I wish showed more Sauvignon character and impart more personality. It is an enjoyable white blend, but it could be better.


Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 92 pts

June 2015 - Light yellow. High-pitched aromas of white peach, mint and honeysuckle. Concentrated, pliant and fresh, offering lovely depth and texture to its subtly complex stone fruit, gooseberry and floral flavors. Nice fruit sweetness here for such a dry wine (1.9 g/l r.s.). Really spreads out to dust the palate and linger on the minerally aftertaste. -- Stephen Tanzer

Sept 2015 - Tasted blind. Pale straw with some spritz. This smells rather sweet with the merest hint of Marlborough pungency about the nose. Very refreshing dry palate lacks fruit concentration but is none the worse for that. There is some tension here and a very delicate hand on the tiller. Young wine that should age pretty well. Some lime flavours with lanolin and herbs. A lightweight wine with interest and potential.

This has a deft hint of toast running amid the lemon curd, verbena, white peach and straw flavors, with an alluring, streamlined finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

This wooded cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc with 20% Semillon is regularly among the best Bordeaux-style white blends in the Cape. Toasty, smoky and complex, it shows notes of wild yeast fermentation, pithy acidity, a savoury undertone and a core of lemon peel, grapefruit and fresh herbs. Drink: 2016-20
