Passionate about his roots, when Italian American John Mariani Sr. established his wine company in the heart of New York’s Little Italy he named it after his aunt, Teodolinda Banfi. In 1978 John acquired an estate in the Brunello region of Tuscany and, together with his brother Harry, founded Castello Banfi. From its inception, the goal of the brothers was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards for the production of premium wines. Established on the philosophy of blending tradition with innovation, Banfi is recognised as a pioneer in raising the standards of Italian winemaking. Today Banfi continues to be family owned and run, headed up by John’s granddaughter Cristina Mariani-May, and their award-winning wines are exported to over 90 countries. Firm believers in sustainability, Banfi are the first winery in the world to be awarded international recognition for exceptional environmental, ethical and social responsibility (ISO 14001 and SA8000). They have estates in Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and Piedmonte where they produce their sparkling wines. Banfi are revered for their ground-breaking research on the clonal study of the Sangiovese grape, research on the composition and ageing of wood for barrels, and their “Horizon” microvinification area where more than 7000 customized barrels and large casks evolve their wines. Banfi are one of Italy's most lauded producers, and in 2019 received “Wine Family of the Year” at the Meininger Awards for Excellence in Wine and Spirits. Although famed for their outstanding Brunello’s and Super Tuscan’s, they make an exceptional portfolio of wines that are sure to impress – their slogan is “Dedicated to a Finer Wine World”!
