Wine tasting notes

The wine has signature 'Hilltops' ripe, dark fruit flavours with a deep, concentrated cherry and blackberry character. It has fine-grained tannins and a racy acidity, which allow it to be enjoyed now but also be aged for up to 10 years.

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2015) - 90 pts

The 2015 Hilltops Shiraz is a crisp, tight example of high-elevation Syrah from interior New South Wales. It's medium to full-bodied, with ample raspberry fruit, silky tannins and a tart, mouthwatering finish.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2008) - 90 pts

Sep/Oct 09. By Josh Raynolds. Bright ruby. Musky red and dark berries on the nose, with complicating notes of dark chocolate and minerals. Fleshy, muscular dark berry flavors are firmed by a bitter cherry skin quality and gain sweetness with air. The tannins are hidden by the musky fruit and only appear at the very end of the long, gently sweet finish. This is drinking well now.

JancisRobinson.com (2015) - 17 pts

Sept 2016 - There's always something vibrant about Clonakilla, and this vintage has the same quality - lively, well-defined fruit with just the right amount of ripeness. Spicy but not overwhelmingly so. Lovely juicy finish. (RH)

Wine Spectator (2008) - 91 pts

Issue: Jul 31, 2013. Fresh and expressive, exuding vibrant tension, this plays crisp acidity against pure black currant, plum and spice flavors, lingering with intensity and finesse. Drink now through 2020.?HS.

James Suckling (2016) - 93 pts

Plenty of ripe dark plum and blackberry fruits on the nose. Chocolate and mocha too. The palate has bright, mid-weight red plum and cherry fruits wrapped in lithe, supple tannins. Nice balance. Really approachable. Drink now. Screw cap.

James Halliday (2016) - 94 pts

From five vineyards in Young, largely 1654 and PT23 clones, 2-3 days cold soak, mostly open-fermented with pneumatic pigeage, some whole bunches included, cultured yeast, 5-8 days post-ferment maceration, matured in French oak (15-20% new) for 11 months. The usual (if that be the right word) Clonakilla signature of perfectly balanced fruit, tannins and oak, always complex yet always with great mouthfeel, black fruits to the fore, with a gentle sprinkle of spice and pepper.

Wine Front (2016) - 93 pts

It’s a little bit arms and legs at present but it’s getting there. Strings of tannin, herb notes,  juicy stone fruit characters and assorted spices/peppers are all attractive in themselves, but aren’t yet pulling properly together. They will do. Indeed if anything this release is more complex than usual; more Clonakilla in a way. The fruit comes across as fresh, the cherried characters at the blacker end of the spectrum, the tannin fine and a little chalky. It’s going to turn out very well. Even another 12 months in bottle will do it a lot of good.

Tyson Stelzer (2016) - 93 pts

Gosh there's a lot of character and appeal tucked into this great value shiraz! Five Hilltops vineyards unite in layers of spice, violets and dark berries, laced together with classy polished, super fine tannins.
