Clos Clare

Clos Clare is a boutique winery, located in a corner of the famous Florita vineyard in the Watervale sub region of the Clare Valley of South Australia. It is one of the oldest vineyards in the Clare Valley, famed for producing outstanding Riesling. Its story began in the 1940's when wine merchant Leo Buring purchased the site and later engaged winemaker John Vickery who made the legendary Leo Buring Rieslings that by 1997 had won 50 trophies and 400 gold medals. Following the death of Buring, Lindemans purchased the estate, but in the mid 1980's began to sell assets, which included the Florita vineyard. Jim Barry, the pioneer of Australian table wine bought the estate, but a 5 acre corner of the Florita vineyard was sold to local artist Ian Saunders, who established Clos Clare. Noel Kelly bought this vineyard in 1996 and owned it until 2007, and during this time Clos Clare Rieslings continued to be recognised as one of Australia's greatest wines. When Kelly retired he offered the vineyard back to Jim Barry's son Peter, who bought it with his two sons Tom and Sam, and the brothers now run the business, and continue to make Watervale Riesling from the original 5 acre Florita vineyard plot. This wine is full of primary lemon and lime and tropical fruit flavours with suburb minerality, and so the legend continues..........
