De Haan Altes Selection
Rafael De Haan was born in Kent, his mother is Spanish, as is his wife Núria Altés. Sharing a passion for wine, they set up their Herència Altés winery in 2010, working the family vineyards in Batea, the village in the Terra Alta region of Catalunya where Núria was born. These are organic wines, ecologically produced with minimal intervention. The flagship grape variety is Garnatxa [Grenache] and a vast range of both white and red Garnatxa wines are produced. These are thrilling wines which maximise the expression of the essence of the fruit. Rafael launched the De Haan Altés Custom Cuvées project, where he partners with local winemakers from different wine areas of Spain, using the indigenous grape varieties of each region to make a range of unique wines showcasing the characters of their respective terroirs. Recently the limited Experimental range of wines was released, where different wine-making methods are explored, including extended skin contact and whole-bunch fermentation. He continues to search for new areas and obscure grape varieties to craft exceptional wines and, although he already has an impressive portfolio, there are more stunners in the wings!
