Domaine Fernand Girard

The domaine is run by Alain Girard, who took over from his parents Fernand and Monique, in the tiny village of Chaudoux, not far from the town of Sancerre in the eastern part of the Loire Valley in the centre of France. The family come from several generations of winemakers, and Alain is fifth generation. 14 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards are planted with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir on the three distinct soils of Sancerre: flint, gravel, and heavy clay, for the production of white, rosé and red Sancerre. There is a state-of-the-art cellar with all the modern technologies: a pneumatic press, stainless steel vats, a temperature control system during fermentation, and an air-controlled environment for ageing in vats and keeping bottles. Only the best of their production is bottled under their own label, with the rest of the cuvées sold to négociants. They take a minimum intervention approach and only use native yeasts for fermentation. The Fernand Girard style is focused; these are precise, zesty and mineral wines.
