Domaine Saumaize-Michelin

The domaine was founded in 1978 by Roger and Christine Saumaize (nee Michelin) from a share-cropping of 3.5 hectares: a scheme whereby 50% of the production goes to the owner of the harvest and 50% to the operator. They are located in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy on the slopes of the Vergisson Rock. The estate was gradually developed and today 10 hectares are under vine planted with Chardonnay, the average age of the vines is 50 years, and they have farmed organically and biodynamically since 2005. They only produce white wines from the appellations of Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Veran and Macon Village. All the grapes are hand-picked; yields are low, they favour native yeasts and, with some exceptions, the wines are bottled unfiltered. Roger's parents were winemakers, and the young Roger started working in the vineyards at 14 years old, learning everything he knows from his father. Now his own son Vivien has joined him in the business. Roger is passionate about his work, striving to express the terroir of each plot. These are traditional small batch wines, meticulously made with care and precision. They really are cracking wines which deliver some of the best the Mâconnais has to offer.
