Domaine Stephane Aladame
St̩phane Aladame is one of the stars of the younger generation of French producers and has already attracted a considerable amount of attention in France. His wines rank among the best to come from the Montagny appellation, and can easily rival those from the more famous C̫te de Beaune (which lies immediately to the north). Whereas many young winemakers inherit their estate, St̩phane began from scratch at the age of 18.
He completed his studies in Beaune before renting vineyards in Montagny. Initial success in selling his small annual production of 150 cases allowed St̩phane to purchase a modest 6.5 hectares of his own. St̩phane now cultivates organically his seven hectares of vineyards (of which six are Montagny Premier Cru). His vines have an average age of 60 years, and Aladame believes that this maturity gives his wines the extra weight and concentration that complement so well the mineral characters derived from the predominantly limestone soil in the region. In 2005, St̩phane started producing a small quantity of Cr̩mant de Bourgogne from grapes he buys from different growers.
