Wine tasting notes

The floral perfume nuance that defines La Cumbre is truly vibrant in the 2013 vintage. This vintage is balanced and harmonious, offering a beautiful freshness. Lavander, violets, blackberries and blueberries captivate the nose. Subtle smoky bacon adds a savory essence to the wine's signature spicy notes. Its volumptuous texture with its fine grained tannins provide a perfect foil for the intensity and richness of the layered fresh fruit ensuring that it is drinkable now but will age for years to come.

Food matching

Big and meaty is what you're after with this wine. Consider a juicy joint of beef or a leg of lamb or a haunch of venison, and a board of rich, full cheeses to follow (though approach blue cheese with caution). It can stand up to hints of spice, so lighter meats such as chicken can be marinated with ingredients such as ginger, black pepper and even some chilli. Avoid seafood and cream.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 93 pts

The 2013 La Cumbre is produced from selected grapes from the Don Maximiliano Vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley and from the Manzanar Vineyard in the cooler Aconcagua Costa; it fermented by individual lot in stainless steel and was raised in French oak for up to two years before blending and bottling. It's still very young and feels marked by the élevage, with plenty of spicy and smoky aromas; it is quite varietal with smoked bacon and violets with a lactic touch and some tar. The palate is medium to full-bodied, quite juicy, round and fleshy, with powerful flavors and good acidity. With time it reveals the cool vintage with some herbal (raspberry leaf) notes.

James Suckling (2013) - 95 pts

A syrah with a dense fruit structure and velvety tannins. Full body, fine tannins and a wonderful length of fresh blackberries and spices. This is real syrah. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2013) - 92 pts

Ripe berry, raisin, prune, chocolate and cool earth aromas make for a fine nose. This is full and rich, a bit chunky, but not too heavy. Flavors of coconut are backed by blackberry fruit; on the finish, that oaky coconut character transitions to vanilla.
