Felton Road

A legendary name in New Zealand!

Felton Road are an iconic winery in the heart of Central Otago, the most southerly wine-growing region in the world, located on New Zealand’s South Island. It was founded 1991 by Stewart Elms, but bought by current owner Nigel Greening in 2000. Nigel has had many callings - a biochemistry drop-out, turned rock and blues guitarist, and then design entrepreneur, involved in the UK millennium celebrations. A serious Burgundy wine lover, Nigel sampled a Pinot Noir during a trip to New Zealand in the late 1990’s and considered it the best new world example of this varietal he had tasted to date. And was this his epiphany! He thought ‘Yes! I can do that! He started reading everything he could about what would make a good site for vine growing and bought the Cornish Point vineyard with Alan Brady in 1998. Brady was famous for being the first man to plant Pinot Noir in Central Otago. However, Felton Road was always on Nigel’s agenda, and in 2000 he heard that it was up for sale, but that Elms had already had an offer. Nigel rang Brady and advised him to tell Elms that he was getting on a plane to New Zealand and not to sign anything until he got there. Nigel had a brief consultation with his wife, saying “I may be going out and spending rather a lot”, to which she replied “you made it, you spend it”, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Felton Road now have 32 hectares spread over four vineyards in Bannockburn, where the soils are ancient glacial loess and the entire estate is run biodynamically, with everything in the vineyard carried out according to the Biodynamic calendar.
Felton Road are Pinot Noir specialists, making five world-class examples – Cornish Point, Bannockburn, Calvert, Block 3 and Block 5, with the unique characteristics of each vineyard expressing its individual personality. They also make stunning Chardonnays and Rieslings.
The wines are made with assiduous care at Felton Road’s modern gravity fed winery ,with head wine-maker Blair Walter having experience in both Burgundy and Oregon.
Nigel still looks like a rock guitarist, and his superlative wines will certainly rock your world!
