Description

BRIONES age average of the vineyard, 45 years, high density plantation. With bush pruning. Clayey soils with gravel in depth. Sustainable cultivation with respects to the environment and which follows the natural cycles of the plant, with organic fertilizers and mechanical work without using herbicides.
Manual harvest and the bunches are selected by hand in the winery

Wine tasting notes

Intense cherry colour with purple hints. On the nose, fruit sensations (blackberries, blueberries, black fruits) dominate the perfectly integrated tones conveyed by aging in wood barrels that provide sensations of cedar and tobacco. It is serious and lively on the mouth with power and a great balance; broad and flavoursome combining fruity freshness and the elegant structure of a wine that is suitable for aging.

Winery information

Finca Allende

Finca Allende is the brainchild of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, one of Rioja's 'modernistas'. The winery is based in Briones, on the right bank of the Ebro river, in Rioja Alta. The soils in Briones are composed of red clay and gravel and the vineyards face north. Miguel's philosophy is that wine is made in the vineyard and he seeks to express the individual qualities of each site, rather than highlight barrel ageing. Indeed, when you visit him in Rioja, he often insists on tasting individual vineyard wines in situ, to fully understand their origin and style. The single vineyard wines Martires, Calvario and Aurus are the ultimate expressions of Miguel's hard work.

Finca Allende practices sustainable viticulture without the use of harmful pesticides or herbicides. Cultivation is done by hand or with the help of horses. Allende's commitment is also ethical and the winery supports various projects aimed at helping more disadvantaged groups. The flagship Allende Tinto is 100% Tempranillo, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 91 pts

This is the winery's flagship red, of which 220,000 bottles are produced. The 2013 Allende was cropped from a wet and cool year with an early harvest that started on September 27th. The grapes come from vineyards in Briones on clay-rich soils, and the destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in stainless steel after a six-day cold soak at 5 degrees Celsius. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 14 months with rackings every four months. It's toasty and with a lactic touch, notes of toffee and something leafy (tea, tobacco). The palate is medium-bodied with some grapey flavors and fine tannins. A lighter vintage of Allende. It was bottled in February 2016.

Vinification notes

Whole bunches destalked and not crushed in stainless steel tanks. Cold prefermentary maceration at a 5º C during 6 days. Fermentation controlled at 28º C during 10 days, with three pumping over a day. Total maceration with skins of 16 days. Devatting by gravity and vertical press. Malolactic is done in stainless steel tanks
