Franz Haas

Franz Haas was established in 1880 and passed down to the first-born child of the family for seven generations, each one named Franz. It has been run since 1986 by Franz Haas the 7th who carries on the legacy, accompanied by his son, Franz Haas the 8th and daughter Sofia. The winery is located in Bolzano, in the Alto Adige region of northern Italy, where 55 hectares of vineyards are under vine. Franz Haas specialises in that capricious of all grape varieties, Pinot Nero. He has meticulously conducted numerous experiments with different clones, vinification and ageing methods. To date he has vinified 592 Pinot Neros, taking note of how varying altitudes give the grapes unique characteristics. The vineyards are farmed organically and reach up to 1,150 metres above sea level, among the highest in the South Tyrol. The soils vary from sandy to clayey with a rich calcium content, to weathered volcanic porphyry. The resulting wines have intense aromas, with more acidity, minerality and ageing potential. Although Pinot Nero is his passion, Franz also grows Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Riesling, Kerner, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Moscato Giallo, Moscato Rosa, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Lagrein and Schiava - to produce wines with the same fastidious attention to detail. Since 2018 all the wines have been bottled under screwcap, as Franz believes this approach better retains the flavour and aromas of his wines. His endless pursuit of perfection produces wines of character and complexity presented in beautiful eye-catching bottles designed by the late Riccardo Schweizer, which are as distinctive as Franz Hass' exceptional wines.
