Giacomo Fenocchio

With vineyards in the heart of the Barolo production zone, the Fenocchio estate has produced wines for over five generations, following the family traditions handed down from father to son. Before the Second World War the wine was sold principally in local markets, but new energy and broader ambitions arrived with Giacomo Fenocchio as he acquired new vineyard holdings in 1964.Today the estate has proprietary vineyards located in three different areas: Bussia in Monforte d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Cannubi in Barolo. All are 'grand cru' vineyards and are recognised as such with microclimates which give the potential to produce wines of exceptional character and personality. With excellent south east and south west exposures, all the vineyard sites have highly favourable conditions for ripening the grapes evenly. The sites vary: Bussia has compact clay and limestone, Cannubi has a sandier, lighter soil, and the holdings in Villero are clay and limestone with rich iron deposits. The wines produced each express their individual terroirs.Two of Giacomo's sons, Claudio and Albino, run the estate. Advances in winemaking technology have enabled them to mechanise operations and work with greater assurance and rigorous quality control both in the vineyard and in the cellars. Fermentation is natural and is entirely carried out by the local micro-flora. The Barolos are aged for five months in stainless steel tanks and two years in Slovenian oak casks, some as large as fifty hectolitres, and are then given an additional year of bottle ageing. The resulting wines are surprisingly approachable when young but will benefit from extended cellaring. The Fenocchio brothers have remained true to the traditional family style, producing elegant and expressive wines with wonderful purity of fruit.
