Heitz Cellars

Tom May had a small vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon in Western Oakville in the Napa Valley. In 1966 he made an agreement with Joe Heitz for Joe to use the fruit from there to make some wine; this was Martha's Vineyard. Ever since Heitz Cellars have been crafting this now illustrious wine, which became the first great single-vineyard Californian Cab. Today it is their flagship wine, still made in the exactly the same way. It remains one of California's greatest wines, an icon which helped to shape the history of the Napa Valley. Heitz Cellars was founded in 1961 by Joe and his wife Alice and the reins passed to their son David and daughter Kathleen Myers Heitz. However in 2018 Heitz was acquired by the Lawrence family, headed up by Gaylon Lawrence Jr, who continues to be make wines in the quintessential Heitz style. They are Cabinet Sauvignon specialists, sourcing fruit for their Cabs from three vineyards in the Napa Valley to make three single vineyards wines. Apart from Martha's Vineyard in Oakville, there is the Linda Falls Vineyard on Howell Mountain and the Trailside Vineyard in Rutherford. Additionally the Lot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed from a blend of Cabs from all the single vineyard sites. They also produce a superb Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc from Howell Mountain fruit and a sublime Chardonnay made with fruit from the Rutherford Trailside and Oak Knoll Quartz Creek vineyards. Additionally Heitz cultivate Grignolino, a red variety from Piedmont, and are the only producers of 100% Grignolino in The States. They also produce a rich and powerful Port-style wine from Portuguese grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sauzᾶo, Tinta Cao, Tinta Bairrada, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Amarela and Bastardo) grown in St. Helena. Altogether 425 acres of estate owned vineyards are under vine, all organically farmed. The May family continue to own Martha's Vineyard.
