Innocent Bystander is located in the picturesque little town of Healesville in Victoria's stunning Yarra Valley in southeastern Australia. It was set up by Phil Sexton; a legendary figure in the Australian drinks industry. He founded Australia's first craft brewery, the Matilda Bay Brewing Company in 1983, and in 2000 co-founded Little Creatures Brewing Company, arguably Australia's most influential craft brewery. But wine was also on his agenda, and he established the Margaret River winery Devil's Lair in 1981, selling this to Southcorp [now Treasury Wines Estates] in 1996, and moved to The Yarra Valley to found a new winery, splitting it into two parallel ventures: Giant Steps and Innocent Bystander. Giant Steps was sold to Jackson Family Wines in 2019, and Innocent Bystander to Brown Brothers in 2016, who signed contracts with the grape-growers previously used by Sexton to ensure that the style remained consistent. This is a cool climate area, and the wines are sophisticated and multi-layered, with superb structures and fine textures, and all presented in the winery's iconic bottle featuring the enigmatic Innocent Bystander!
