Leogate Estate Wines

Bill and Vicki Widin purchased the original 50 hectare under vine Brokenback vineyard nestled at the foothills of the majestic Brokenback Mountain Range in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales in 2008. It had first been planted in the late 1960's by English-born Len Evans OBE, as part of the Rothbury Estate syndicate. Len is known as “the Godfather of the Australian wine industry” and “Australia's leading ambassador of wine”. The two sets of cast iron gates to the Brokenback Vineyard feature a lion rampart and were the inspiration for the winery's Leogate name and label. At the time of purchase Bill and Vicki were Black Angus cattle producers, but they used their knowledge of the land along with the expertise of Senior Winemaker Mark Woods to reinvigorate the Brockenback Vineyard and transform it into the success it is today. Currently the sustainably farmed vineyard is planted with 18.1 hectares of Chardonnay, 3.9 Semillon, 28 Shiraz, 2.5 Verdelho and 1 hectare of Tempranillo. An ultra-modern winery was completed in 2012. Leogate have been awarded numerous medals since its inception for their wines which are served on Qantas First and Business class flights. James Halliday has rated Leogate Estate as a 5-Star winery for the 10th consecutive year, saying it is an “Outstanding winery producing wines of exemplary quality”. Well you can't get a better recommendation than that!
