Wine tasting notes

South African Cabernets are a lovely mix between new world fruitiness and old world elegance. This is a bold and juicy red wine with red-berry fruit aromas and a touch of oak spice. Classic cabernet cassis and red-currant fruit flavours with silky tannins and a long finish.

M?A?N Family Wines began in 2001 when three friends got together with the aim of making wine that they?d love to buy - quality wine with smart packaging, but at price they could afford.Next they needed a name that would unite their three families, but particularly appeal to their wives after they?d unsuccessfully convinced them that their winemaking venture was a sacrifice rather than a lot of fun. To keep the peace in the families, they took their wives? initials - Marie, Anette and Nicky ? to create M?A?N Family Wines.Owners Jos? Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh are supported by 30 dedicated grape growers from the Agter-Paarl region who are also shareholders in the business. All M?A?N growers are accredited as environmentally sustainable and socially responsible farmers by the South African Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme and the South African Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA).Production may have grown from just 300 cases made in a tractor shed to over 175,000 cases per year, but they still make wines that are modern and distinctive with a touch of Old World elegance. They are wines that they like to call "daily wines for wine geeks."

eRobertParker.com #215 Oct 2014 - Neal Martin - The 2013 Ou Kalant Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the few wines from MAN Vintners that fell short of expectations. It has a bright, minty bouquet with macerated dark cherries and iodine aromas. The palate is well balanced with quite chunky tannins and it does not possess the finesse of other wines from MAN Vintners, a little raw and bitter. Drink now.


Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 85 pts

Bright ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, blueberry, licorice and smoky oak on the nose, with a whiff of flowers. Supple, broad and easy to drink, with an enticing dark berry sweetness nicely buffered by lively herb and flint notes. Finishes with rather soft tannins and lingering notes of redcurrant and plum.

Vinification notes

From several un-irrigated vineyards in the Agter-Paarl area. Our Malmesbury Shale soils have excellent water retention ability and give concentrated, flavourful grapes, which were handharvested at optimum ripeness and given a 2 day cold maceration. Fermentation took place over 5 days in stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs. Just before dryness, the wine was pressed and put back into tank for malolactic fermentation. 22% of the wine was matured in 225L American oak barrels (20% new) for 12 months. Fined and filtered before bottling.
