Molinico Loco is produced by Familia Castaño, who are based in Yecla in Murcia in southeastern Spain. They began the production of Monastrell in the 1980's, and now they are Monastrell specialists. 80% of their 600 hectares of vines are dedicated to this variety, [some of which are 70 years old] planted on sandy limestone soils at altitudes ranging from between 500 – 750 metres above sea level. The lime content of the soils, together with the high altitude, imparts freshness to the wines – the trademark of Molinico Loco. Named after a molino [windmill] that stands on the Castaño vineyards – normally the sails of windmills turn on windy days, but this windmill is loco [crazy] and turns on calm days!
