Orben

Bodegas Orben was established in 2005 by the Antón family (of Group Artevino fame who also own Bodegas Izardi in Rioja, Bodegas Vetus in Toro and Finca Veillacreces in Ribera del Duero), in Rioja Alevesa, near the village of Laguardia, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria looking out on the Ebro Valley. Orben is the group's small-scale boutique project, set up with the aim of producing a single estate Rioja. They sustainably farm 28 hectares divided into 79 micro-plots, with an average size of 0.30 hectares, each with its own character. The vines were planted between 1945 and 1954 at an altitude of between 550 and 675 metres above sea level on calcareous and clay-limestone soils. They predominantly cultivate Tempranillo, but there is also a small amount of Graciano for their Rioja, and Viura, Malavasia, White Tempranillo and White Maturana for their white wine called Chocolate n°2 CVC. The old low-yielding vines are grown goblet style and head pruned. The grapes are hand-picked, fermented is in stainless steel, and aged in fine grained French oak for between 12 and 15 months. The winery is state-of-the-art, a magnificent structure that blends seamlessly into the stunning landscape with the cellar entirely underground. Orben is a modern Rioja, fruit-driven, and elegant.
