Ossian

Ossian was founded by winemaker Ismael Gozolo, in the village of Nieva in the province of Segovia; this is in the Rueda wine region of Castilla y León in north-western Spain. The Gozolo family have worked the Nieva vineyards for five generations. A pioneering producer, Ossian was the first winery in Rueda to be certified organic, and the first winery in Rueda to install a cold room to hold the grapes before they are sorted on the selection table. In 2013 the Ruiz Aragoneses family acquired Ossian. They own the Pagos de Carraovejas winery in Ribera del Duero and, with Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses at the helm, Ossian is their project to recover an exceptional legacy. Ossian are Verdejo specialists. It is the only grape variety they cultivate and their vine heritage is truly impressive - the vines are well over 100 years old, and some have been there for two centuries. 55 hectares of organically farmed ungrafted vineyards are under vine with low-yielding Verdejo, planted at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level on ancient sandy soils veined with Cambrian slate. It is the very nature of these soils that saved the Nieva vineyards from phylloxera, as that little louse that devastated European vineyards at the end of the 19th century cannot thrive in sand. Ossian use Burgundian techniques, utilizing wild yeast for fermentation, which is carried out in both stainless steel and barrel. Lees stirring adds texture and flavour complexities, and ageing is predominantly in old French oak with a little new. Ossian passionately craft some of Spain's finest white wines - they have tremendous personalities which are truly unique. The wines are designed to age beautifully, and have remarkable concentration and structure. capturing the very soul of old vine Verdejo.
