Pewsey Vale

Pewsey Vale are Riesling specialists. In fact they are obsessed with Riesling and their production is completely focused on this one grape variety. It all started in 1847, when their vineyard was the first to be planted in the Eden Valley by Englishman Joseph Gilbert, from Pewsey Vale in Wiltshire. Gilbert established the region’s first winery and Pewsey Vale was also the first vineyard in Australia to cultivate Riesling. The Great Depression in the 1920's caused the winery to go downhill and eventually abandoned. Fast forward to 1961, when Geoffrey Angus Parsons became aware that Pewsey Vale had been Eden Valley's founding vineyard and winery and, together with his friend Wyndham Hill-Smith, began to reinvigorate the vineyard, planting with Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pewsey Vale remains under the custodianship of the Hill-Smith family, but there is no longer any Cabernet Sauvignon in sight - it's just their one true love, Riesling, Riesling and more Riesling! The altitude of the vineyard provides different microclimates, varying between 485 and 500 metres above sea level and sits 250 metres above the Barossa Valley floor. The cooler climate here provides a longer ripening period which is crucial for producing premium quality Riesling. Pewsey Vale are part of the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program, and all their wines are released under stelvin cap. Pewsey Vale are iconic Riesling producers and their Rieslings are the most awarded in Australia. Their sublime collection of wines capture the purity of their single vineyards site, encapsulating their philosophy - One Vineyard. One Variety. One Vision.
