Wine tasting notes

Dark-ruby red, very concentrated, with hints of purple, which show the great vitality of this vintage. Evolved and austere, with beautiful aromas of wild ripe red berries, leather and spices. Taste Powerful, big, round, yet extremely elegant. Great balance, and velvety sweet tannins. Silky and very persistent in the finish. Wonderful aging potential.

Winery information

Poggio Antico

There are a number of parallels between this estate and that of Casanova di Neri. Here is another family business which has seen success despite control being turned over to one of the younger members of the family, in this case Paolo Gloder. Both estates have taken oenological advice from popular consultant Carlo Ferrini..

Expert reviews

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014) - 85 pts

The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is about as good as it gets in this vintage. Medium in body, with good fruit intensity and balance, the 2014 offers lovely depth in an early drinking style. Dark cherry, spice and lavender add complexity, but as is the case with all of the 2014s, what is missing most is persistence. -- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2014) - 16 pts

Tasted Mar 2016 - Just mid crimson. Spicy cherry and minerally nose. Supple, transparent palate with a bite of tannins on the finish. Well made. (WS)

Wine Spectator (2014) - 87 pts

This red boasts cherry, currant, earth and tobacco flavors, starting out with nice fruit and finishing on the crisp side.

James Suckling (2014) - 90 pts

Gorgeous aromas of sliced strawberries and flowers with citrus fruit underneath. Medium-bodied, very fine and delicious. Fresh finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (2014) - 87 pts

Subdued aromas of French oak, underbrush, espresso and menthol lead the way. The rather lean but polished palate offers tart sour cherry, vanilla and roasted coffee bean alongside vibrant acidity and firm tannins that grip the finish.

Vinification notes

Vinification -In 80-hectoliter stain-less steel tanks, truncated-cone shaped, at controlled temperature, which never exceeds 32°C. First fermentation lasted 15 days. Thanks to the particular technical characteristics of these tanks, which also have a completely removable lid, the punch-down system is used, instead of the pump-over procedure, in order to achieve a better and gentler extraction, avoiding the use of pumps. Aging - 16 months in total, 12 of which in 500-liter French oak tonneaux.
