The Symington family are of Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry. They can trace their lineage back to 1652 via their great-great grandmother, and they have been making Port in the Douro for five generations. They have a solid reputation for producing premium Ports under the Graham's, Warre's, Dow's, Cockburn's and Smith Woodhouse labels. Today they own the largest collection of individual vineyards in the Douro Valley, with a staggering 1,024 hectares under vine spread between 26 Quintas in the prized subregions of Cima-Corgo and Douro Superior, including the largest organic vineyard in the Douro (112 hectares), but all their vineyards are managed sustainably. They began producing Douro wines in the 1990's made from the same indigenous grape varieties grown in the same vineyards as their Ports, releasing the first Altano red in 1999; Altano is their flagship brand for table wines. The modern, minimalist owl on the Altano labels represents the keeper of the Symington family's grapes and vineyards. The grapes for their red wines come from their own vineyards, but those for the white wines are sourced from vineyards privately owned by members of the Symington family and from selected higher altitude vineyards from growers who have supplied them for decades. This unparalleled collection of sites is unmatched by any other producer, and affords a choice of fruit that is singular in the region. They are strong advocates of the indigenous red and white grapes of the Douro and they showcase the uniqueness of the region's fruit and terroirs through this distinctive easy-drinking range of wines which are of outstanding quality and represent outstanding value!
