Bodegas Vetus is owned by the Artevino Group, who also own Izardi, Finca Villacreces and Orben. It all began in 1987 when Gonzalo Antón, the owner of the Michelin starred Zaldiarán restaurant in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country, founded Bodegas Izardi, uniting his two pleasures – wine and gastronomy. Gonzalo's son Lalo Antón began to enlarge the company and in 2003, aware of the area’s great potential, expanded into the Toro wine region of Castilla y León in north-western Spain. Here the Tempranillo grape goes by the name of Tinta de Toro and from this variety, selected from different vineyards, they produced Vetus, which was so successful that they established an estate which opened in 2008. The poor soil here produces low yields of concentrated grapes. The bodega now produce three wines crafted from 100% Tinta de Toro sourced from the estate's 20 hectares of vineyards, which includes a small pre-phylloxera plot of centenary vines. A combination of French and American oak are used for ageing. Under the Vetus label a Verdejo is also produced from the neighbouring DO of Rueda, where this white variety reigns supreme. The grapes come from old bush vines planted at 800 metres above sea level on very sandy soils. The Vetus wines preserve their essential regional characteristics, but with new nuances and subtleties added to their intriguing personalities.
