Wine tasting notes

Deep red to crimson in colour. The aromatics display baking spices, plum, licorice allsorts, and blackberries. There are nuances of sea spray and ozone, combined with a melange of dark berries. The palate is rich and supple with great depth. Dark fruits, such as blueberry, are complemented by a savoury mid palate, showing tapenade and dried herbs. There are lovely bitter chocolate tannins and the recognisable structure and architecture that Coonawarra Cabernet is famous for. The palate crosses the line between savoury and fruit sweetness beautifully and will be a lovely youthful wine as well as maturing into an elegant and structural older wine.

Food matching

This wine can stand can stand up to rich and robust fare, but is also perfect to complement simply cooked or grilled red meat, game and chicken. It works well with most cheeses and cold-cuts, including salami. Vegetarians can try it with roast root vegetables or vegetable tarts. Avoid ingredients and preparations that are too subtle, cream sauces and anything that is overly salty or spicy.

Expert reviews

James Suckling (2016) - 94 pts

Really impressive depth and poise, this offers aromas of blueberries, cassis, chocolate and dark plums, ahead of a deeply rich palate that is bathed in ripe, fleshy cabernet fruit. The tannins serve the wine well. Drink or hold.

James Halliday (2016) - 93 pts

Power of suggestion maybe but it really does smell of tobacco and/or cigar. Fresh, green tobacco with svelte blackcurrant and mint swooping in. It's glossy and smooth through the mid-palate and then stringy, herbal and dry through the finish. Cabernet to a tee.
