Wine tasting notes

The appellation line of Malbecs from Altos Las Hormigas highlights the different terroirs of Valle de Uco. In each area, ALH features a soil type and a specific climate, producing a wine that accentuates its origin with longevity and a signature texture. The limestone in Vista Flores brings out a distinctive muscular character, unique among Valle de Uco Malbecs. This luminous cherry colored Malbec with pink hues offers a delicate first nose of red currant, minty blackberry leaves and tenuous smoky notes. Aromas of passion fruit, accompanied by gentle white pepper complete its cheerful bouquet. This is confirmed on the palate in a light bodied, silky wine with very delicate tannins, along with mango and crunchy plum notes. On the finish, sweet spices and dried herbs linger with a fleshy, natural acidity.

Altos Las Hormigas is based in Lujan de Cuyo which is one of the region's premier vine growing areas. Altos Las Hormigas is known as a Malbec specialist with a reputation as one of the country's top five producers of this variety, Altos Las Hormigas spearheaded the revival of Malbec in Argentina in the 1990s, while many others were insistent on planting and vinifying Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. April 2014 Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - The 2012 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary is produced from 100% Malbec from three different vineyards in Gualtallary, the most calcareous zone within Tupungato in the Uco Valley, a more austere and mineral wine than the Altamira, which feels a little more exuberant. This is restrained and mineral, serious, deep and with imperceptible oak (aged in 3,500-liter foudres). A tour de force Malbec in one of the (if not the) highest potential regions in Argentina. Tasted Sept 2014 - Wild terroir. Spicy and nervy. Very new terroir in Mendoza. Dry finish and with real energy. Very dry finish with light, sandy tannins.

Wilder and more herbal than the Altamira bottling from Altos, this has a garrigue-like perfume of wild herbs that wouldn’t look out of place in the south of France. Extreme and almost austere on the palate, this has acidity, minerality and palate length in abundance. Drink: 2015-22

Vinification Notes

Grapes from different plots were vinified separately before the final blend. The destemmed and softly pressed grapes went into small stainless steel tanks for two days at 10°C for cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation then began using native yeasts whilst cap management was conducted with rack-and-returns. The time between crushing and pressing was approximately 20 days. Immediately after malolactic fermentation the wine was matured in 3,500 litre untoasted Foudres for 18 months and spent a further six months in bottle before release.
