Wine tasting notes

Intense dark violet color, with a surprising brightness. Aromas of red fruit and cherries, combined with subtle notes of violet and purple flowers, marking the varietal presence. Delicate toasted aromas, given by the oak.

The Pulenta family has been a prominent and respected force in Argentine viticulture for three generations. Dec 2016 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2012 Gran Malbec blends wines from Agrelo and Valle de Uco (Los Árboles), from specific plots they select to control yields and produce it in small volumes, including some micro-fermentation in small roll-fermenters. It underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels where it matured for some 18 months. It has more concentration and depth. It has fine-grained tannins and very good balance, very fresh for a ripe vintage like 2012.

June 2017 - What a fantastic nose to this polished and intense wine. Wet earth, blackberries, licorice and walnut shell on the nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a fabulous finish. This is one of the best top class malbecs. So wonderful to drink now but better in 2019.

Bright, medium ruby-red. Lovely violet lift to the aromas of blackberry, licorice and tropical dark chocolate. Slightly port-like but fresh and fine-grained, with black cherry, menthol and herb flavors lifted by an herbal greenness. A distinctly blacker wine than the XI Grand Cabernet Franc but not quite as satisfying or smooth. In fact, distinctly tight and dry, even a touch bitter-edged, finishing with obvious mineral reserve. This impressive wine will merit an even higher score if it shows more sweetness and give with bottle aging. -- Stephen Tanzer

Editor's Choice - Dark, tarry chocolate and blackberry aromas lead to a full-bodied and fresh palate in this wine. Its toasty black-fruit flavors are nicely spiced, finishing with peppery and toasty notes of coconut and chocolate. Drink through 2028.

Combining fruit from Agrelo and the Uco Valley, as they always do, the Pulentas seem to have the best of both worlds: the plushness of the former and the freshness, perfume and structure of the latter. Manual selection of bunches and grapes at the winery. 48 hours of cold maceration at 8°C and complete maceration for 21 days. Fermentation in small stainless steel tanks, roll fermentors, and oak barrels. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrels. 18 months aging in new French oak barrels.
