Wine tasting notes

At release, the wine is a deep red with a vibrant purple hue. An aroma of rich blackcurrant, subtle star anise spice and a touch of eucalypt. French oak maturation is also evident with subtle aromas of tobacco leaf, cedar and chocolate. This is a wine of great intensity. It has distinctive blackcurrant and cassis fruit flavours. Subtle oak characters of cedar cigar box and spice are also evident. The tannins are fine and elegant – a hallmark of the varietal. The palate is well balanced, complex and fulfilling and lingers on the finish.

Wakefield Estate

Wakefield is a third generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first 178 hectare vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn. The vineyard was carefully chosen to benefit from red-brown loam over limestone soils (also known as Terra Rossa) and the Clare Valley’s cool climate which were known to.. read more

July 2015 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a classic blackcurrant nose with clove, pencil shavings and menthol highlights. Medium to full-bodied, the concentrated palate is very pure and is framed by nice, grainy tannin and just enough freshness. It finishes long.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2015)89 pts

Glass-staining ruby. Aromas of dried cherry, cassis, licorice and mint, joined by slowly emerging woodsmoke and dark chocolate notes. Bitter cherry and currant flavors open up slowly while gaining flesh and breadth. Clings nicely on the finish, which features youthfully firm tannins, a touch of smokiness and building sweetness

This has a distinctive, minty edge amid a strong cassis and blue plum fruit core. Gently leafy too. A confident expression of cabernet. Bright and attractive. Drink now. Screw cap.

This medium-bodied Cabernet shows some of the variety's hallmark austerity in its firm structure. Cassis, sage and red currant aromas and flavors finish crisp and lingering. Drink now with rare beef or lamb, or hold and drink 2020–2025.

There aren't too many better cabernets priced under $20 on the market, this wine over-delivering in every context, especially that of the Clare Valley. The colour is good, the bouquet and palate a complex array of cassis, mulberry and eucalypt on a cushion of ripe tannins. The only quibble is the amount of oak influence.

Natalie McLean (2015)90 pts

Juicy, full-bodied, rich and delicious on the palate. This robust red wine at a great price offers tremendous value and bang for your buck. Attractive aromas of mint and blackberry on the nose. It finishes nicely with black plum, espresso and cloves. Black in hue with aromas to match. Dark fruit, tar and smoky oak. Pair with juicy hamburgers.

Tastings.com 91pts - "Garnet black color. Attractive, spicy, fruity aromas and flavors of spiced berries, creme Anglaise, and hint of bouillon with a silky, tangy, fruity medium-to-full body and a tingling, engaging, long chocolate lemon and orange peels, dark roasted pecans, flower petals, and cedar finish with well-integrated, chewy tannins and moderate oak. A supple and inviting cabernet that will compliment a fine steak."
