Wine tasting notes

The season allowed fruit to ripen wonderfully, producing powerful opulent flavours and a flinty mineral backbone which combine beautifully with barrel fermentation to create Burgundian inspired Chardonnay. Flavours are reminiscent of white stone fruit with delightful soft texture ensuring a long commanding finish. Partial malolactic fermentation and lees stirring has enhanced the texture, complexity and mouth feel allowing it to match most entrée dishes and kaimoana. 100% grown from Escarpment’s Te Muna Road site in what can be considered a remarkable year for the variety.

Winery Information

Nestled amongst the undulating hills of Martinborough, in the gaze of the Aorangi Ranges, Larry McKenna, or Larry ‘McPinot’ as he is affectionately known, quietly crafts some of New Zealand’s most impressive wines. Pinot Noir is the grape he is most famous for, and his Insight Series of single vineyard expressions speak volumes for the unique Martinborough terroir. Not wishing to be in any way pigeonholed, he also produces world class Chardonnay and Pinot Gris!

Feb 2017 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The 2014 Chardonnay delivers fresh grapefruit, white peach and lemon curd notes with struck match, marzipan and toast hints. Medium-bodied and elegantly constructed, it has depth, creaminess and great length with plenty of poise...what more could you want? (2014)16.5 pts

Tasted May 2016 - A little smoky (reductive) on the nose and palate. Deep and full bodied with the alcohol in balance. Lots of richness in texture and spice without massively ripe fruit, appley. Long, taut and powerful yet juicy and full of brightness. Nicely dry finish. (JH)

Offers toasted nut notes up front, with a crisp, smooth core of lemon and pear flavors. Finishes spicy. Drink now.

James Suckling (2015)93 pts

Impressive grapefruit and lime pith, ahead of yellow nectarine and neat oak influence. This is well made. The palate has a very focused and strikingly refined shape and is gently mealy with a long and pithy grapefruit finish. Drink now.

Bright medium yellow. Candied yellow fruits, pineapple and a floral note on the nose. Supple and sweet if not particularly complex or gripping, with the ripe pineapple flavor showing good concentration and carrying well on the back end. No shortage of savory extract here. -- Stephen Tanzer

Struck match, white fruit, lemon butter, toast and spice. Medium bodied, flinty and juicy, with some fresh citrus and zest livening it up, spice and toast, with a pleasant pithy bitterness on a well proportioned finish. Excellent drinking here.
