Villa Maria

It is not easy to tell your Dad that you are quitting a career in carpentry to try your hand at making wine. But in 1961, at the age of 21, that's exactly what Sir George Fistonich did. He leased five acres of land from his father, planted one acre with grapes and started making wine under the name 'Villa Maria' which he chose because his friends thought it sounded European. Since those first cuttings took hold in the soil out in Mangere, near Auckland, Sir George has been determined to be at.. read more

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2012)85 pts #209 Oct 2013 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Displaying a nose of lime juice, fresh grapefruit and acacia honey with a hint of jasmine, the dry and light-bodied 2012 Private Bin Dry Riesling has an invigorating line of acid lending freshness through the medium to long and relatively simple finish. Lime juice, a few grams of residual sugar giving very welcome ripeness on the finish. Chewy texture, long finish. This is a great example of proper Riesling at a decent price. GV (RH)

James Suckling (2013)88 pts

Bright, musky and packed with ripe stone fruits and citrus, this has been neatly captured and nicely finished. Acidity chimes in later on the palate, and there's a grassy edge, too. Drink now. Drink now.

Floral and citrus aromas with a hit of steeliness. Hello riesling! Tangy and tight with fine chalky pucker, really zingy citrus finish and a clip of appley sweetness. Fresh and fine, long in flavour and really delicious. Touch simple, but the etched structure makes it a better wine.

Michael Cooper (2014)4 stars

The 2014 vintage (4*) is also attractively scented. Medium-bodied, it has strong, lemony, tangy, slightly sweet flavours (7 grams/litre of residual sugar), showing very good ripeness, balance and depth. Fine value.

Vinification Notes

Villa Maria’s Riesling vineyards are scattered throughout both the Awatere and Wairau valleys of Marlborough. The vineyards are managed to ensure ripe and clean fruit. Timely canopy management activities such as shoot thinning and leaf plucking along with an attention to vine health optimizes the opportunity for the ideal vineyard flavours at harvest. The grapes for this wine were picked in the cool of the night at peak flavour development. Each batch was lightly pressed and the juice was naturally settled. Cool fermentation with selected yeast strains was utilised to aid in retaining the delicate Riesling aromatics. The ferments were assessed and stopped with cooling to help form a concentrated yet dry styled wine
