Villa Maria

It is not easy to tell your Dad that you are quitting a career in carpentry to try your hand at making wine. But in 1961, at the age of 21, that's exactly what Sir George Fistonich did. Ripe, moderately concentrated and easy to drink, the 2017 Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc encapsulates what has made Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc so successful over the years. It offers distinctive passion fruit and mild green aromas, medium body and a zesty, refreshing finish.

Very pale yellow. Aromas of gooseberry, lime, passion fruit and peppery spices. Supple, plump and easygoing, with good concentration to the soft, gently sweet flavors of melon and citrus fruits. Finishes with a hint of candied banana and modest spine and grip. -- Stephen Tanzer

Vivid lime, dried mango and peach flavors are generous and juicy, reverberating on the finish.

Editor's Choice - The nose is limey and floral, with stone fruit and pea shoots at the core. It's the palate that keeps you coming back for more, with acidity that is in check rather than enamel-stripping, held up by a juicy, limey core.

Clean, fresh, pure fruity perfume with just a hint of floral things dancing around. Nice way to start a refreshing young sauvignon blanc. Clean, crisp and long in the mouth with cool fruit, a hint of mintiness, gentle sweetness of fruit and yet lightly herbal too. Feels gentle and kind to drink. Yes.

Bob Campbell MW (2012)82 pts

Light, fresh and delicately flavoured Sauvignon Blanc with subtle grapefruit and lemon grass flavours. A suggestion of sweetness is nicely balanced by fruity acidity to give an off/dry finish.

Michael Cooper (2014)3.5 stars

The 2014 vintage (3.5*) is highly scented, with ripely herbaceous flavours of melons and green capsicums, lively, dry (4 grams/litre of residual sugar) and crisp.

Vinification Notes

The fruit was crushed, pressed and settled for 24 hours before being racked clean off press solids for fermentation. Both neutral and aromatic yeast strains were used. Fermentation was conducted cool at 12-14ºC to ensure maximum retention of delicate flavours and aromatics. Soon after fermentation was completed the wine was bottled to capture its vibrancy and freshness.
