Wine tasting notes

Deep, rich ruby red in colour with a garnet rim. Intense and fruity on the nose, it shows aromas of raspberries and wild strawberries with a balsamic and spicy oak background. Medium-bodied and balanced on the palate, it displays gentle acidity together with soft and polished tannins that leads to a tasty and fresh round finish. It offers juicy, succulent, ripe fruit and liquorice.

Winery Information

Torre de Ona

Torre de Ona was forged in 1995, when La Rioja Alta, S.A. led this exciting project with the aim of making an excellent quality wine incorporating all the personality of the best vine plots in the prestigious Rioja Alavesa area. A unique location that they were convinced provided clear potential for making a great modern wine, capable of transmitting ? as with the great "chateaux" ? the exclusive characteristics of a privileged estate.Since then, and always focused on the continual improvement.. read more

Wine Advocate #210 Dec 2013 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2010 Finca San Martin displays a light color and a perfumed nose, with clean, fresh notes of raspberries and strawberries, very Tempranillo and very Rioja. It?s very drinkable, with very fine tannins, wood perfectly integrated into the wine, good acidity and persistent flavors. It is a good value. Drink 2014-2016.Torre de Ona was an ambitious project created 1986 in the tiny village of Paganos belonging to Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa that was finally purchased by La Rioja Alta in 1995. Traditionally only one wine was produced exclusively from the grapes from their 61 hectares of vineyards, but in 2005, they started separating their more productive vineyards, which produced a lighter wine and created a second brand, Finca San Martin. The wines are distinctly more modern and fruit-driven than the ones produced at La Rioja Alta.

This red is focused and polished, delivering harmonious flavors of black cherry, olive, smoke and mineral. The tannins are well-integrated, the acidity fresh. A bit reserved, but has depth. Drink now through 2022

Sept/Oct '14 - Dark red. Aromas and flavors of redcurrant, dried cherry and cracked pepper, with a subtle floral note in the background. Dry and tightly focused, showing a tart edge to the vanilla-accented finish, which is framed by gentle tannins.

Vinification Notes

Finca San Martín is produced from 100% Tempranillo, sourced from the plots San Martín I and II that surround our estate winery in Páganos (Álava). Hand-picked and put into small boxes to avoid juice spoilage. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in tanks. It was aged for 16 months and hand-racked three times, using new American oak casks (60%) and two-year-old French oak casks (40%).
