Black grape variety originating from the northwest of Italy, where it is most closely connected with the area of Monferrato of Piemonte. Approximately 10 DOCGs exist in Piemonte producing wines made from Dolcetto grapes. The most famous being Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba, Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore, Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore.

Dolcetto is an early-ripening, intensely coloured grape that produces wines full of fruit, and with notes of liquorice, almonds, and spices. The name translates as 'little sweet one', which is reflective of the grapes low acid level.
