Grecanico

Grecanico is a white grape variety which, through recent DNA profiling, was discovered to be the same grape as Garganega. It is a white grape variety of the Veneto region, Italy: specifically Verona and Vicenza, where it is often blended with Trebbiano and Chardonnay. The variety contributes invariably 70-100% of the blend for Soave, creating spectacular wines in the zone of Soave Classico, where controlled yields are able to ripen optimally. It is also grown in the Gambellara, Bianco di Custoza, Colli Berici and Colli Euganei DOCs, and outside of the Veneto region in Umbria and Friuli. This variety is potentially very high-yielding which results in thin, neutral wines, therefore yield control is fundamental in order to achieve quality. Due to the high acid levels sweet Recioto (produced using a grape drying technique), wines are made successfully.
