Wine tasting notes

Straw yellow with a green hint and a deeply perfumed floral nose. The wine displays intense aromas of wisteria and sweet jasmine, balanced with light spicy notes. The full-bodied palate shows surprising power while the natural zest of Riesling ensures fresh and vibrant acidity. The finish is wonderfully long and aromatic.

Vie di Romans

Gianfranco Gallo is a perfectionist. Not for him the unoaked, oversweetened simplicity of many white wines from Friuli; he is more interested in richness, texture, length, complexity and the ability to age. For this reason, he releases his white wines 18 months after the vintage. Each wine reflects the way in which a particular grape variety performs on a certain site, for each varietal is named after the vineyard in which the fruit is grown. Gallo is based in the heart of Isonzo, where his 50.. read more

Monica Larner - The 2013 Friuli Isonzo Flors di Uis is an unoaked blend of 45% Malvasia Istriana, 15% Friulano and 40% Riesling. The results are fragrant and authentic with generous layers of zesty fruit, spicy intensity and fragrant honey. Passion fruit is followed by citrus, wild sage, spring flowers and polished river stone. The wine's appearance is luminous and bright. This is a standout and memorable Italian white.

Luminous golden-tinged straw yellow. Aromatic nose of peach, pear, crystallized ginger and tropical fruit. Outstanding salinity and juicy cut really extend the tropical and spicy fruit flavors on the long back end. A lovely wine, boasting lots of flavor and only 13% alcohol. Very well done. The Flor di Uis is almost always, every year, one of the best wines from Vie di Romans.

Tasted Sept 15 - Just smelling this and I want to drink it rather than spit. Pure, nutty, stony citrus, ripe and complex, the oak in a suppporting role. Intense, a little creamy on the palate but stunning freshness and depth and salty/sour long finish. I haven't tasted older vintages but I suspect this will age well. (JH)

Spice and mandarin orange peel accents lead into this aromatic, light- to medium-bodied white. The silky palate boasts finely meshed flavors of pink grapefruit sorbet, stone, Thai basil and fleur de sel. Elegant and mouthwatering. Malvasia, Riesling and Friulano. Drink now through 2022.

James Suckling (2015)92 pts

Plenty of rich fruit with sliced apple and pineapple character. Praline undertones. Full body. Delicious finish. A blend of malvasia istriana, tocai friulano and riesling renano. Drink now.

This focused white opens with alluring aromas of citrus, yellow stone fruit and a whiff of baking spice. Made with Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Riesling Renano, the savory palate offers juicy peach, nectarine, apricot and ripe pear. It has a tangy lemon-drop finish.

Vinification Notes

Each varietal was harvested and vinified separately. Grapes were picked, de-stemmed and crushed before pre-fermentation cold maceration at 8ºC for 6 hours. Fermentation took place in stainless steel at temperatures of 19-20ºC with selected yeasts and lasted 15-27 days. 100% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged for 7 months in stainless steel tanks on its lees. Blending of the separate varietals took place just before bottling in mid-June 2007.
