Black grape variety grown primarily in North West Spain, specifically in Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras. Despite speculations, Mencía and Cabernet Franc are not related. Style-wise, this variety is generally thought to be light and pale. However recently highly concentrated, deep and complex wines have been produced from old vines grown on hillside vineyards in Mencia. Mencia is also the same variety as Portugals Jaen.
