Black grape variety extensively planted across central Italy, specifically in Abruzzo where it makes Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and in the Marche for the use of Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. It is also grown in Molise and Puglia. Fine examples are dark in colour, elegant with hefty, yet integrated tannins. In 2003 a DOCG was awarded to Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane.
