Picpoul

Picpoul

Picpoul is an intriguing variety of grape, primarily grown in the Languedoc region of southern France. It is perhaps best known for its role in the white wine, Picpoul de Pinet. Picpoul grape offers a delightful dichotomy as it is both zesty and full-bodied. Quite a rarity amongst other white grape varieties!

The name 'Picpoul' translates roughly to 'lip stinger', reflecting the grape's naturally high acidity. This characteristic acidity gives wine created from Picpoul grapes a refreshingly crisp taste, perfect as a palate cleanser. The grape itself is considered quite robust, tolerating both coastal and higher altitude conditions.

Its distinctive oval-shaped berries have a relatively thick skin which makes them resistant to rot in the typically damp, morning conditions of its growing region. The flinty and chalky soils in the Languedoc vineyards contribute to the unique flavour profile of the Picpoul grape, nourishing it with mineral-rich sustenance that imbues the wine with its characteristic minerality.

When it comes to the tasting notes, Picpoul wine is mostly dry and light-bodied, with an attractive nose of citrus fruit, blossom, and Mediterranean herbs. It is harmoniously balanced with a thriving acidity, which makes it an ideal accompaniment with seafood, particularly oysters and shellfish. In recent years it has grown in popularity, especially in the UK, as an alternative to pricier white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Its growing conditions and resistive characteristics make it a win-win for both producers and consumers.

While the Picpoul grape may be primarily recognised for its contribution to one type of wine, it should not be overlooked; the unique taste experience it offers, combined with its availability at an affordable price point makes it a favoured selection amongst white wine enthusiasts. This pale golden gem continues to uphold and enrich the French history of wine production with its distinct qualities and characteristics, ensuring the Picpoul grape's position as a stand-out amongst its peers.
