Pignoletto

Pignoletto

The Pignoletto grape is an indigenous Italian variety, primarily cultivated in Emilia-Romagna, specifically the regions of Modena, Bologna and a portion of Ferrara. The vineyards for this grape varietal are typically nestled in hilly regions, profiting hugely from diverse mineral soil compositions and favourable climate conditions. More specifically, clay-limestone soils provide an optimal environment for growth, endowing the grapes with distinctive character and flavour.

The Pignoletto grape is most acclaimed for the production of sparkly, vivacious white wines, praised for their vibrant acidity and fresh aromas. These wines flaunt a smooth, rounded flavour, layered with notes of apple, pear, and nuances of citrus, with a finish that subtly echoes hints of bitter almonds. The alcohol content is generally moderate, rendering the wine pleasantly drinkable.

In recent years, there's been a surge in the global appreciation of Italian native whites, resulting in an increased interest in Pignoletto. This in turn has led to a reassessment and revival of the cultivation of this grape variety. The addition of Pignoletto to the lineup of praised Italian white wines signifies its importance as a national treasure, and represents an additional string to the bow of Italy's viticultural landscape.

In 2014, a DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) was established for Pignoletto grape wines, giving the vines a protected status. Since then, the winemakers have been divided into distinct areas for production, which resulted in more classified and high-quality wine.

The Pignoletto grape brings forth wines that are best enjoyed while young. They pair delightfully with a range of traditional Italian appetisers, creamy pasta dishes, and seafood. When served chilled, its light and refreshing palate makes it the perfect aperitif and a favoured choice for social gatherings and alfresco dining.
