Wine tasting notes

Dr. Loosen’s “Red Slate” Riesling is a dry counterpart to the classically fruity “Blue Slate” Kabinett. Red Slate Riesling Dry has an intense minerality that is warm and enveloping, with a floral, spicy, citrus blossom aroma and a harmonious palate. The dry style is ideal for classic continental cuisine.

Mar 2016 - Stephan Reinhardt - The 2014 Riesling trocken Rotschiefer (aka Red Slate) is sourced in the Zeltinger/Rachtiger Deutschherrenberg, Erdener Herrenberg, and the grands crus Lösnicher Försterlay and Kinheimer Rosenberg. Although the Loosen team selected three different kind of grapes and eliminates botrytis for the dry wines, especially for the Kabinetts, there are some overripe raisin flavors on the bright nose. Light-footed and very mineral on the medium-bodied palate, this 11.5% alcohol Rotschiefer displays a stimulatingly crisp, salty and grippy finish. (2014)16 pts

Tasted May 2015 - Very slight hint of mushrooms on the nose but dominated by lemon and a little peachy. Tastes pretty dry and the dry texture accentuates this well. Juicy and steelier than the Dr L Dry Riesling. (JH)

The tangerine and lemon-lime flavors are well-defined in this crunchy, juicy white. The zesty finish is filled with savory herb notes. Drink now

Wine Enthusiast (2012)87 pts

Whiffs of lanolin and honey lend warmth to zesty lime aromas on this dry, briskly structured Riesling. The palate is fresh like an alpine forest, showing delicate notes of pine frond and grass. It finishes briskly with cutting lemon and apple flavors.

Jamie Goode (2011)90 pts

Lively, fresh, sweetly fruited nose with lychee, grapes and lemons. The palate has some melony richness, as well as nice open lemony fruit and a dry, slightly pithy finish. Dry but fruity; not heavy, and very drinkable

Vinification Notes

It is produced with fruit from estate-owned vineyards in the red slate soils in the villages of Erden and Ürzig. Farmed specifically for producing a dry wine, it is fermented with native yeasts in 3,000-liter, neutral oak casks. The casks help to soften the acidity, and they allow a tiny amount of oxygenation that adds texture and greater complexity to the wine.
