Wine tasting notes

Deep mahogany brown, with olive hues A combination of malt and honey, with hints of raisins and the unmistakable scent of tea leaves, which is the hallmark of Rutherglen topaque. There is a real lusciousness and weight on the palate with full, mellow honeyed flavours, lingering complex rancio characters and drying tannins on the finish to balance the sweetness and prevent it from cloying.

Winery Information

Campbells of Rutherglen

Campbells produces some of the world's finest dessert wines. This family-owned vineyard and winery uses the "solera" method of blending and maturing new and old wines over a period of years. (Some of the material used for blending is 70, 80, even 90 years old.) The solera, originally made famous by the Spanish and Portuguese, is a series of up to seven casks, each containing wine at successive stages of maturation. The result is a uniformity of quality, age and character that elevates the.. read more

June 2010 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The NV ?Isabella? Rare Tokay offers a deep brown color with the slightest edge of green. The nose is complex with earthy loam and girolle aromas giving way to treacle, toasted hazelnuts and toffee. The palate is unbelievably sweet and viscous but there is also jaw-clenching acidity that perfectly balances that extreme unctuousness. Very long in the finish with layers of nut and spices really developing for those that can actually wait before taking another sip of this gorgeous nectar.

July 2010 - Bright amber with a copper rim. Deeply pitched aromas of smoked meat, toffee, sultana raisin, apricot pit and herbs. Smooth, fleshy and extremely sweet, but with surprising acidity to buffer the unctuous dried fruit and candied nut character. Completely stains the palate and lingers with admirable intensity and spicy persistence. I'd be tempted to serve this with blue cheese or a nut tart but suspect it would be best by itself.-- Josh Raynolds (NV)19 pts

Sept 2013 - Vibrant brownish red. Really complex on the nose. Sun-dried raisins, treacle, some walnuts. And lift. Really very smart indeed. And hugely long. Such life!

Jun 15, 2010 - Rich, dense and sweet, this is aromatic with sandalwood, balsa, walnut, toasted hazelnut, toffee and coffee notes around a core of dried fig and cherry. This actually gets lighter on the finish, demanding another sip. Muscadelle. Drink now. –HS

Dark amber in color and going greenish at the rim, the basis of this wine is clearly old stocks going back well over 60 years. It's full-bodied, unctuous and superrich, oozing with molasses and rancio character, but balanced by citrusy notes. The finish is incredibly sweet and long, coating the mouth with coffee-like essences that linger for minutes. J.C. (2/1/2011)

Jan 2015 - A deep well of flavour, preserved and kept fresh to make the weight on our shoulders seem lighter. If you look deep into this wine's olive-mahogany hues you're likely to glimpse an insight into human existence. Such is the profound depth of flavour. Toffee apples, sweet tea, raisins and stone fruits dried and shrivelled. There's a tar-like thickness here; a burst of lime/toffee treacle

Testimony to the expert blending and great old reserves of the legendary house of Campbells, this dense, viscous, black topaque is charged with astounding complexity, yet retains impeccable balance and integration.

Feb 2011 - Dark chocolate is the first thing that comes at you from this amazing old wine, then the dark malt biscuit notes, some toasty elements and dried dates - complex and captivating. The palate is richly flavoured with the same collection of characters seen on the nose, add some treacle through the finish, the texture is elixir-like in its smooth richness. Amazing poise and length.

Vinification Notes

Fruit is left to ripen on the vine until as late as possible to ensure the necessary high degree of lusciousness. Juice is fermented for only a very short time before being fortified with neutral spirit and stored in oak to mature. Only the very best fruit from the finest vintages is used in the blend.
