Wine tasting notes

While the wines ultimately revert to their highly refined center of gravity as they resolve some time 4 or 5 years after bottling - an elegant composition of tertiary spices, fruit liqueur and alpine botanical extracts - Besson Grenache generally comes out of the gate dominated by one of those elements. The 2018 falls squarely in the liqueur corner, the effect of the rested fraction of the grapes being at least temporarily buried beneath the considerable cherriosity. This vintage is quite reminiscent of the 2014, one of our favorite vintages, at the same stage of development.

Winery information

Birichino

Based in Santa Cruz, Birichino was founded in 2008 by friends Alex Krause and John Locke. Alex and John met whilst working at Randall Grahm's Bonny Doon Vineyard and share a passion for perfumed, elegant but slightly mischievous wines; in fact, Birichino is Italian for 'mischievous'! The Birichino style is very much in the vein of 'New Wave California'. The focus is on drinkability, fruit expression, elegance and lower alcohol levels. Oak is rarely seen, whole bunch is embraced, native yeasts are in and filtration is out. Alex and John source grapes from reputable growers, who farm very old vineyards in mostly maritime-influenced or higher altitude areas such as Monterey or Santa Cruz Mountains but they also work with some extremely old vineyards in Lodi. Their Cinsault from the Bechthold vineyard is made from the world's oldest Cinsault plants. These wines represent exceptionally good value, given their pedigree

Expert reviews

JancisRobinson.com (2018) - 16.5 pts

‘George and Martha Besson’s old Grenache vineyard near Gilroy is one of the best sites with which we work. It could be nothing but Grenache, yet tastes like no other Grenache. The 2018 falls squarely in the liqueur corner, the effect of the rested fraction of the grapes being at least temporarily buried beneath the considerable cherriosity. The fermentation was native in stainless and cement, and elevage was in cement and 225 and 500 litre neutral oak, and we bottled comme d’habitude without filtation/fining.’ The Bessons own two vineyards, the other Saint Georges, 2 km apart. Lots of sweetness and true Grenache character – albeit with quite a bit of tannin. Proper varietal stuff without too much alcohol.
